I have a 1894 Double Barrel Remington shotgun. The serial # is 360252, so it is a Model 1900. The stamp under the - Answered by a verified Firearms Expert. I am looking for the year my Remingtom shotgun was made the serial number on the stock, forearm & barrel is 52252. There is another number on the forearm and barrel it is 4693. We have serial number 1704 engraved and gold enlayed the guns where actually made from 1932 to 1951 there were approx. They are actually the predessor to the model 32 kreighoff. Very good guns we have shot ours a lot.

Hell, saw that you were asking about the 20 ga. 1100 on a 12 ga. When Remington started making the 20 ga. 1100's, they, at first, used the 12 ga. Now, I have one of these, and in my opinion, they are valuable because they end up being a heavier gun that the newer, later model 20 ga. 1100's using a scaled down frame.

All Model 1100 Remington shotguns were serial numbered in blocks of numbers. Each serial number has a suffix and the following indicates the meaning: V = 12ga.

One must be careful with Remington serial numbers because the serial numbers for the Models 1882/83 and the Model 1889 are the same. The Model 1882/3 starts with serial number 001 in 1882 and runs through 15,000+ in 1884. The Model 1889 begins with serial number 001 in 1889 and runs through 250,401+ in 1910.

  1. Remington serial #ed all their rifles, I have a M24 Gallery Gun that was built in the early '20s, and it's a got a serial #. The Model 12's # is probably on the tang or under the front of the receiver, like my M24.

  3. Remington's web site had a marvelous article on the Model 11 a few years ago, but it had disappeared the last time I looked for it. *just checked again and couldn't find it; Drat* If you call Remington at 800-243-9700 and tell them the serial number of your Model 11, they'll (in my experience) kindly tell you its year of manufacture.

If you have the barrel, the barrel should tell you the manufacture date. As noted above, the serial number only identifies the model type (which might indicate a manufacture range, I should admit).
However, the lettered barrel code is the best way to find the manufacture date, assuming the barrel is original.

But, there are also apparently a lot of guns without the barrel codes. Made right in the middle of when Remington was doing the barrel code thingy. I know; I have a Model 1100 LT20 Magnum (1978 vintage) with the original barrel and no barrel code, and an 870 12 gauge Magnum (circa 1976) with the original barrel, also with no code, and finally an 1100 28 gauge (Probably 1976 or 1977) with no barrel codes. I love it when these things happen.
Oh yes, they all have a lonely little proof mark on the other side of the barrel.

Call Remington at 1-800-243-9700.(I think they are open M-F 9-5pm EST)
Follow the prompts (I think it is 7 and then 1) and you can speak with an actual person who can tell you month and year the gun was made. Barrels might sit a bit but receiver are the parts that are serialized.
I have nothing but positive feedback to give Remington. The staff has been very helpful. Nice to speak with folks..
Just my $0.02 worth...

100% on the pat on the back for Remington's staff. I am sure they sometimes have to wonder why all these people care exactly when their guns were made nearing a half century ago. But, they come through repeatedly just the same.

I guess it might be important to know if it is over a half century old. This would make it eligible for transfer under a Curio and Relic FFL. (At least I think that is how it works..)

I have a Rem. model 870 12 ga Vent rib wingmaster, and am curious as to the born date. Here are the pictures below at the link provided. , also with receiver serial number , some blocked out. Any help as to the weird horse shoe mark and the circle with the line on top would be great, thanks.

Wow, an over 8 year old thread revived. But, kudos on using the search engine !
No prefix is pre 1968, and by that number I would guess yours is late 1967 or early 68. If you have 4 numbers whited out I think that is the highest pre '68 serial number I have seen, because they generally went in order until they changed the prefix and then started again. Your barrel code is RW - and R is November (or 1968) and W is 1972. My guess is the barrel is 1972 and is not original to the receiver, but nothing is surefire. I have seen a pre 1968 2-3/4' 12 gauge with an 'L' suffix, which by all accounts is non existent, and I have seen every imaginable 'barrel code', including none at all. The horseshoe is an assembly line mark.

Thanks for the help, Virginian ..I also bought my son a an 870 12 ga express. it has the square barcode on the receiver. RS47785Z, the two letters are backwards on the barrel. KC but upside down it says CK. not even stamped all that well. As far as the rest of the serial on the other , its S656868V. Way more quality in the wingmaster. Any help on the date of the new one? I think I got 2008. Also 2017 depending of its ck or kc. any help appreciated. Thanks.

When did Remington begin milling the relief slit at the back of the operating handle slot?

I'm confused as to which gun has what serial number and barrels code. We are talking 3 guns, right?
Dan, the 1100s have had the slot since 1963. No slots on 870s.

My 16-gauge 1100 must be pretty early since the relief cut is missing. It came with three barrels, two of which have no date marks and the third has PV, which I take to mean June, 1979, way too late to be original to the gun. The serial number has 5 digits and the W suffix, no prefix. I have an inquiry into Remington, will report what they say.

Going mostly on memory (dicey at best) the early 16s and 20 gauge standard weights did not have the stress relief slit behind the bolt handle slot, at least up thru 1973. I do not know when they added that to all gauges. The 28 gauge and .410 Matched Sets in 1969 did have the relief slits, as did the LW and LT 20s. The much later Classic 16s had it too.

Remington says my 1100 was manufactured in 1964. I also asked about the relief cut. They don't have a recorded date for that but believe it was in the 1970s. I have a vague memory of an article dealing with receiver cracks where the solution was to drill a small hole at the end of the crack. Still looking for that article.

I have heard of receiver cracks and issues with the LW 20s, but I have only ever seen two 12 gauges with cracks, and one of those had enlarged gas ports (didn't get to check the other one). I have seen a LOT of Standard 20s used in Skeet and no issues. The cracked 1100 I didn't get to examine had a hole drilled and was still trucking. Crack was at the rear of the relief slit.

FIREARMS INFORMATION

Remington never (*) (**) used serial numbers to identify the date of manufacture of it's firearms, they however stamped a date code (spelled out below) by the first letter meaning the month and the last letter the yearof manufacture.

BARREL DATE CODE - stamped exposed on LH top rear of barrel after 1920

the following will only be stamped where applicable

#2 Part order barrel (not originally assembled to firearm)

#3 Service section received

#4 Return as received

#5 Employee sale

R.E.P. On the RH side of the barrel will be a Magnaflux, Remington proof & a test mark

If a gun is returned to the factory as a fire damaged, or blown up firearm, the factory will stamp it as a prefix to their date code with a #4 on the barrel and return it un-repaired. Then if the gun is ever subsequently returned to a warranty center or the factory by ANYONE, they will refuse to work on it as an unsafe firearm.

REMINGTON MANUFACTURING DATE CODE

stamped on LH top rear of barrel, 2 or 3 digit, (month first, year after) these will normally only be the last letters as seen below,

with the whole list shown here ONLY if it had been returned for repairs
The anchor shown here with the date code is just a symbol, as many different inspector marks will be seen

The above information was taken from Remington's own information sheet, so if your gun may not conform, then I am also at a loss in explaining.

The factory says all barrels are date code stamped, well I have found some that are not, or if they are, are so erratic stamping that trying to decipher them is impossible.

The photos below may help a bit. Both were taken off Remington 760s, with the one on the left, a 30-06 that I bought new October 10, 1954. This has been rebored to a 35 Whelen Improved. The one on the right again a 30-06, but with a shorter barrel that I made into a knock around quad rifle with pivot mounts.

Here the R represents November, & the ZZ would be 1953. The fourth digit being a 3 is inconsequential being an assembly number. There is no inspector mark on this side. Here the first (LH) mark is the final inspector mark, the O represents July, the R would be 1968. And the F again being an assembly number.

(*) Typically from the beginning, they NEVER used serial numbers to DATE their long firearms, but date codes. That does not preclude them from also assigning serial numbers. However for factory purposes, serial numbers were not the primary method of dating a firearm. Long guns made before 1941 (WWII) were serial numbered, even the 22 calibers. After the war with numerous new 22 caliber models being introduced, serial numbers were not assigned to ALL GUNS until the Federal Gun Control Act of 1968.

(**) On 8/9/99, they stopped stamping the barrels with the date code. They however continued to mark the date code on the end flap of the shipping box for shotgun barrels however. They planned on using just the serial numbers to tell when the gun was manufactured. So there was a 2 year gap in rifle date coded barrels and the normal consumer, or gunsmith would have to contact the factory for this information. They then saw the error of their ways apparently because of being inundated by phone calls and resumed stamping the date code on the barrel on 10/1/01.

You will notice the year code repeats itself, but over 20 years difference. in this instance, you will need to know when each model was manufactured. To find general manufacturing dates it may be best to go to the Blue Book of Gun Values, which does give manufacturing dates of most models. So even if it (the code stamping) was used on the same model that could have been production over MANY years, in all likelihood sights or stocks would be different which would indicate the different date.

You will also notice the month code spelling out BLACKPOWDERX, this is a common code in the firearms industry. Also some letters were left out if there was a chance of misidentifying a date. Also they jockeyed year letters to a new starting point in 1980.

Also for the 870 and 1100 series shotguns there was a code to identify caliber/size of the actions.

If you find marks on the underside of the barrel, they will more than likely be fitters or assembly marks, which mean nothing as to dating the firearm.

I have seen one EARLY 740 S/N 54,9XX that has a barrel date coded May of 1969, which apparently had been sent back to the factory and rebarreled with a original 740 barrel instead of a 742 which was in production at that time.

An issue that people need to be aware of, is that many Remington firearms such as the 870 series of shotguns can have their barrels easily changed or replaced. So, if the barrel is not original to the specific firearm in question the barrel date code may be meaningless. Also if there is a custom or aftermarket barrel installed it will not have these factory codes.
Compunding the issue a bit may be the fact that Remington Arms stamps their final inspector stamps and assembly (product) codes in the immediate area of the date codes. So it may be difficult at times to determine exactly what is what. With that in mind, and considering a lot of variables. If a specific Remington firearm has a serial number, Remington Customer Service is always the first source which should be checked for date of manufacture as they would be the definitive source. There are no publically accessible databases for Remington serial numbers.

With the hundreds of different Remington models produced over the past 200 years, it can sometimes be difficult to determine the age of your firearm.

Overview
Since serial numbers were not required until 1968, your firearm may not have a serial number. For models without a serial number, we may be able to determine the age by the 2-3 letters that are stamped on the barrel. If your firearm does have a serial number, if you will call or email to the address below, the serial number and model number we can determine the approximate age of your firearm.
Contact Remington through their Help Center by e-mail at [email protected] or call their historian at 1-800-243-9700 Mon-Fri 9-5 EST. (this number may not be operationa since Remington moved to the deep south).
