Before Creating your Own PopClip Extensions

First, determine if PopClip is the right solution. PopClip is great in that you can use it for a variety of things, however, it is easy to add to and overwhelm the PopClip bar with many extensions. Sure you can remove and hide extensions in PopClip from showing on the bar but sometimes it's best to focus on the common items that you would need PopClip for to limit the amount of time used in managing the extensions. There may be unique situations where you need a certain extension for a certain project.
PopClip is a convenient tool but remember that other applications may be able to perform the same function easier or more conveniently with selected text, copied text, or without text. For example, Alfred (free) can perform web searches or open web pages (based on query or keyword), while Alfred (Powerpack) can do pretty much everything with workflows. Automator can create services and applications, both capable of running AppleScript.
Think about how you want to invoke the script/action:
  • Right-click Menu
    • Services
  • Keyboard
    • Alfred
    • PopClip - using AppleScript to make it appear on hotkey
  • Mouse
    • PopClip
  • Application, File
    • Applescript
    • Automator > Create Application
Second, determine if a solution already exists:

Developing PopClip Extensions

PopClip Extensions end in .popclipextz files. If you change, the extension to zip, you can unzip the file and see the contents, including scripts. You can use this to see how another solution addressed the same/similar issues. To go along with this, you can search for and download PopClip extensions outside the main extensions page. Try google site searching github.com for popclip extensions or another repository.

Unsigned Extension Warning

By default, PopClip will display a warning dialog when you try to install your own extension, because it is not digitally signed by Pilotmoon Software.
If you find this gets annoying while you are testing your work, you can turn off the warning. Run the following command at the Terminal, then Quit and restart PopClip:
defaults write com.pilotmoon.popclip LoadUnsignedExtensions -bool YES
Please be aware that PopClip extensions can contain arbitrary executable scripts. Be careful about the extensions you create, and be wary about loading extensions you get from someone else. Proceed at your own risk.
